Things are all back to normal now folks. Fortunately, this doesn't appear to have had any real impact on anyone, as despite the backlog of tasks anything important like sending notifications is always treated as a priority.
We'll be sitting down later today to take a closer look at what happened, and how we can prevent this from occurring again.
We are still working to reduce to amount of background tasks, the queue does not appear to be impacting notices arriving on the status page and notifications getting out the door too, which is good news. Will continue to monitor things here.
Ok, I've found a monster-sized queue of background tasks which I'm just having a closer look at now, along with scaling up resources to take on the extra demand.
